HOW WELL IS FAMILY PRACTICE KNOWN IN PUBLIC
Objective: This study has been carried out to find out how well family practice, that stands at the center of the discussions about primary health care services of our country is known.
Method: A questionnaire, prepared for this study, was applied by face-to-face interview to a representative sample of Edirne municipality region formed by 30 clusters covering 1999 home resident cards including 407 families. 1008 adults at these families were asked to answer “what is family practice?”. Also after a text that described family practice services was read, they were asked to choose an answer from a 7 degree Likert scale about how their manner would be to such a service.
Results: 532 of the cases were women (%52.8), 476 were men. Most of them were in the well (%39) and intermediate (%46) socio-economic level, %17.3 of them didn’t have social security coverage. 631 of the cases couldn’t answer the question “what is family practice?”. Most frequent explanations were “they supply medical care to all family members” %54.6; “this kind of medical services are available abroad” %21.7 and “they perform continuous medical care and keep the medical records” %20.5. The mean score of the scale of the described family practice service was 4.95±1.58.
Conclusion: Family practice specialty is not well known among the public in Edirne and existing information is not reliable. But after making the description of the family practice, positive responses give hope for the future.
