PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF FAMILY MEDICINE IN TURKEY
The 21st century’s health care system is defined as a system that provides safe, scientific data based health service, respectful to patient’s individual preferences, needs and values, avoiding waste of time, and that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristics. The Turkish health care system must undergo an innovation and transformation period to cover these identities. Being a system implicates the existence of manpower illuminated with education and research. Family physicians who are the manpowers of primary health care must have the competency to put in practice the previously defined values. In order to reach these objectives, the activity plan of family physicians, with the participation of organizations and other partners that share similar values should continue to meet the needs of patients and society in a changing health care environment, provide practice based research, promote the delivery of primary health care services both in private, governmental and academic health centers and provide professional development opportunities to clinicians with a lifelong learning method. The aim of this paper is to discuss the plans necessary to promote better primary health care services and to improve the family medicine discipline.
